The Contax G1 and G2 cameras embody the nostalgic charm of the 1980s and 1990s, preserving the essence of a bygone era. This timeless, refined quality is why I cherish vintage cameras. More than tools, they’re works of art that evoke emotion with every touch, connecting me to the past.
The Contax G1 and G2, launched about twenty years ago by Japan’s Kyocera, are the world’s first rangefinder (RF) cameras with autofocus, unlike the manual-focus Leica system. Crafted from titanium alloy, they offer a solid feel and elegant design, like finely made sculptures. It’s remarkable that such craftsmanship existed two decades ago, but sadly, with the decline of film cameras, Kyocera ceased production, and no digital versions have emerged.
Recently, Contax G lenses have seen a revival, thanks to their superb imaging when adapted to Sony NEX digital bodies. The iconic Contax G system includes six prime lenses—G16, G21, G28, G35, G45, G90—and one zoom, the G35-70. Their sharp quality and unique colors captivate photographers. I treasure these lenses for their classic beauty, infusing every photo with story and soul.
