During this visit to Tokyo, we took the opportunity to ride the JR Yokosuka Line (or Shonan-Shinjuku Line) toward Shinagawa and Yokohama, exploring the Shonan area in Kanagawa Prefecture, including Kamakura and Enoshima.

Kamakura, the birthplace of the Kamakura Shogunate, established in 1185, marks the beginning of Japan’s feudal era under shogunal rule.

The Kamakura Shogunate was founded by the warrior Minamoto no Yoritomo, who defeated the aristocratic Taira clan led by Taira no Kiyomori, establishing shogunal rule. Thereafter, the Japanese Emperor became a symbolic figurehead, with the Kamakura Shogunate serving as the true political center, marking the end of the era dominated by the Emperor and aristocracy.

Strolling through Kamakura’s shopping streets, we noticed that about 80% of the visitors were Japanese locals, with many young Japanese families bringing their adorable children, creating a lively and heartwarming atmosphere.

Kamakura’s shopping streets bear a striking resemblance to Taiwan’s Tamsui Old Street, with shops offering a variety of trinkets, clothing, and daily necessities, alongside local specialties like dried whitebait, freshly grilled rice crackers, and an array of ice cream flavors, creating a vibrant and bustling atmosphere.

However, due to the commercialization of the old streets, Kamakura’s cityscape lacks the distinctive charm one might expect.

The most captivating destination on this trip was Enoshima, a charming sandbar island situated at the mouth of the Katase River as it flows into Sagami Bay, offering stunning and unique scenery.

Enoshima, with its distinctive island charm, has become a renowned tourist destination in Japan. On the way to Enoshima, the most captivating experience is the scenic journey aboard the Enoshima Electric Railway (Enoden Line).

The Enoshima Electric Railway, spanning 10 kilometers, operates on a 1.067-meter narrow gauge, identical to the tracks used in Taiwan’s railways during the Japanese colonial era. Its charm lies in the unique way the train navigates both conventional rail tracks and the intersecting streets of small towns, offering a distinctive scenic and atmospheric experience.

The Enoshima Electric Railway weaves through urban tracks, intertwining with pedestrians, shops, and residences, evoking the nostalgic charm of an old-time train and creating a delightfully picturesque scene.

The Enoshima Electric Railway is well-known among Taiwanese fans due to its appearance in the iconic anime Slam Dunk, where the train scenes at Shonan High School feature the scenic coastal backdrop of the Enoden Line.

The Enoshima Electric Railway combines elements of Taiwan’s Jiufen railway and Kaohsiung’s light rail, yet its carriages exude a refined Japanese elegance and a warm nostalgic charm, embodying the distinctive allure of a classic Japanese train.
